Medicare

Medicare is a type of federal health insurance designed for individuals who are 65 years of age or older. You can sign up for Medicare three months before you turn 65, and may even be eligible for early enrollment if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's disease).

The different parts of Medicare help cover specific services:

  • Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)
Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)
Part B covers certain doctors' services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage)
Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs (including many recommended shots or vaccines).

There are several rules for choosing employee health benefits with Medicare.
